Wednesday is considered either the third or the fourth day of the week, between Tuesday and Thursday. The name comes from the Middle English Wednes dei, which is from Old English Wodnes dæg, meaning the day of the Germanic god Woden (Wodan) who was a god of the Anglo-Saxons in England until about the 7th century. Wodnes dæg is like the Old Norse Oðinsdagr ("Odin's day"), which is an early translation of the Latin dies Mercurii ("Mercury's day"). Although Mercury (the messenger of the gods) and Woden (the king of the Germanic gods) are not equivalent in most regards, both gods guided the souls of the dead to the underworld.

Setting up Your Email

Setting up your email is fairly straight forward, and in the initial draft of this chapter I will be detailing the procedure using Thunderbird. Thunderbird is an excellent email client that you can download for free and use on Windows, Linux, and Mac systems. If you haven't already tried it, I highly recommend it.

If you are not using Thunderbird, you can follow along anyway, the procedure for setting up your GaltGroup email account will be similar in most email clients.

If you haven't already done so, start up Thunderbird. The first time you launch Thunderbird an Import wizard will appear asking you if you wish to import your email settings, address book, and other data from another email client, for now select "Don't Import Anything" and click "Next." Now Thunderbird will finish starting up.

Once started it will present you with the "New Account Setup Wizard." If the wizard does not appear, you can start it manually by clicking "File" in the menu bar at the top of the window just below the title bar. In the drop down list highlight "New." This will open a side list, from this list click on "Account..." A new window will appear, this is the "New Account Setup wizard."

Now that we have the wizard started click the radio button labeled "Email account" then click the "Next" button in the bottom right corner of this window.

On this next screen you are presented with two text boxes labeled "Your Name" and "Email Address." Continuing in the same vein as in previous chapters, I will be using the name "Bob Lawblaw" as my real name and "bahblabla" as my user name. In the text boxes I'll enter "Bob Lawblaw" and "bahblabla@galtgroup.net." You will want to use your own particulars. When you are finished click "Next"

On the next screen you will need to enter the server information, to do this click the radio button "POP" and in the "Incoming Server" text box enter "pop3.galtgroup.net."

If the "Use Global In box" check box is checked, I recommend unchecking it. This will keep each of your email accounts separate if you have or will have more than one. If your GaltGroup email address will be your only email account in Thunderbird you can leave it checked. I still recommend unchecking it in case you add another email account in the future. Next enter "smtp.galtgroup.net" in the "Outgoing Server" text box. When you have completed that, click "Next."

On the following screen, make sure your "Incoming" and "Outgoing" user names are set to the correct value. In my case that would be bahblabla. Then click "Next."

On this next page, you should tell Thunderbird what you wish to call this account. The default of "username@galtgroup.net" should be fine. Click "Next."

On this final screen of the account creation process, verify that your settings are correct. If not, click "Back" to fix any mistakes. Also, make sure the check box "Download Messages Now" is unchecked. Click "Finish"

Now we have to tell Thunderbird to use encryption for the incoming and outgoing servers. This is a lot easier than it sounds. In the menu bar click "Edit," and from the drop down list click "Account Settings." This will open a new window. In this window click "Server Settings" in the left-hand list and that will bring up the "Server Settings" screen on the right hand side. Look for "Security Settings," below that you will see several radio buttons. Click the one labeled "SSL" on the far right. Make sure that the port setting is now changed to 995 and the default is also 995.

In the list on the left-hand side you will find an entry called "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" click it, now the right-hand screen will display the information for the outgoing server. Make sure "smtp.galtgroup.net (SMTP)" is selected, then click the "Edit" button to the right.

In this new window make sure that "SSL" is selected, and also make sure the port is now set to 465. Click "OK" to close the window and the "OK" again from the settings window.

That takes care of setting up your email in Thunderbird. Try checking your email by clicking the "Get Mail" button near the top-left corner. If you get an error message, check your settings again and make sure there are no mistakes. If you don't have any mail, try sending an email to to your GaltGroup account and then check it again. You should also send an email from your GaltGroup email account to another email account. Everything should be working at this point and you can happily begin using your email.

This concludes our email setup chapter. Take a milk, and have a snooze. That's what I intend to do.
